Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı (Director, KOC-KAM), Professor of Psychology


Family, gender, human development and the self in cultural context

Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı is a professor of psychology at Koc University, Istanbul and the director of KOC-KAM.

Prof. Kağıtçıbaşı’s work is in Social/Cultural psychology and extends into policy relevant applications. Her book Family, Self and Human Development Across Cultures: Theory and Applications  (2007) reflects her research interests well. Her theoretical and applied work has spanned the topical areas of family, gender, human development, and the self in cultural context. Prof. Kağıtçıbaşı is the former president and fellow of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology and was the Vice-President of the International Social Science Council and International Union of Psychological Science. She has received many awards, such as for “Distinguished Scientific Contributions” from American Psychological Association (1993), International Association of Applied Psychology (1998), and European Association of Developmental Psychology (2007). She was a founding member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences and is presently a member of the Science Academy. Prof. Kağıtçıbaşı has an ongoing project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) on intervention programs with early adolescents to promote overall well-being and positive youth development.

Hülya Şimga (Vice-Director, KOC-KAM), Associate Professor of Philosophy


Philosophy, gender studies, feminism, women’s human rights, ethics

Hülya Şimga is an associate professor of philosophy and the chair of the Philosophy Department at Koç University (Istanbul,Turkey).

After receiving her undergraduate degree in philosophy at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul, Turkey); Dr. Şimga went to the USA for graduate studies in philosophy. She received her master’s and PhD degrees at Duquesne University (Pittsburgh, PA). She is a member of American Philosophical Association (APA), Turkish Philosophical Association (TFK) as well as AtGender (The European Association for Gender Research). Dr. Şimga also writes in on-line news papers and does translations. She speaks Turkish (native), French and English.  Dr. Şimga has published numerous articles in national and international journals on women’s human rights, second wave feminism, Simone de Beauvoir and Judith Butler. Her most recent work is “Judith Butler and an Ethics of Humanization,” is forthcoming in Dialogue and Universalism, 3/2014.

Ahmet İçduygu (Member, KOC-KAM Executive Board), Professor of International Relations


Migration studies, political demography, ethnic and racial studies, Mediterranean studies

Ahmet İçduygu is Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Koç University, Istanbul Turkey. He currently holds a dual appointment as a full professor at Koç, one is in the Department of International Relations and the other is in the Department of Sociology. He is also the Director of the Migration Research Center at Koç (MiReKoc). He holds a PhD in Demography from the Australian National University. He is an elected member of the Science Academy in Turkey. In addition to his own individual research projects, Prof. İçduygu has conducted various research projects for the international organizations such as IOM, UNHCR, EU, OECD and ILO. He teaches on migration studies, theories and practices of citizenship, international organizations, civil society, nationalism and ethnicity, and research methods.

Bertil Emrah Oder (Member, KOC-KAM Executive Board), Professor of Law


Comparative constitutional law, comparative constitutional review, EU law, international human rights law, gender equality

Bertil Emrah Oder is full professor of constitutional law at Koç University Law School and currently, she serves as Dean of Koç University Law School. After receiving her LLB from Istanbul University Law School, she obtained LLM degree from Marmara University European Union Institute. She received her PhD degree in law with distinction (“summa cum laude”) from University of Cologne (Germany). She worked as associate director and executive member of various centers for EU law, human rights law, international relations and gender studies and as international consultant of UN Women and Inter-Parliamentary Union as regards legislative screening and capacity development projects on gender equality.

Stochastic models, operations research applications in health care

Lerzan Örmeci received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey  in 1990 and 1993, respectively. Her Ph.D. degree (1998) is in Operations Research from the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. After completing her Ph.D., she joined research institute EURANDOM located in Technical University of Eindhoven for two years. She also worked as an instructor at Rotterdam School of Economics in Fall 2000. Then, she joined the Department of Industrial Engineering at Koç University in Spring 2001, where she is now an Associate Professor. Örmeci spent the year 2010 as a visiting scholar at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Her research is in the area of stochastic modeling. Recently, she is interested in modeling and analyzing health care systems.

Zeynep Gülru Göker (Research Associate, KOC-KAM)


Contemporary democratic theory, feminist theory, political participation, deliberative democracy, women’s movements, gender and militarism

Zeynep Gülru Göker is a research associate at KOC-KAM. She received her Ph.D in political science from City University of New York Graduate Center (2011) and her BA in social and political sciences from Sabanci University (2003). In her Ph.D dissertation, she compared deliberative and agonistic democracy based on their conceptions of political action and discussed the relationship between silence and politics with a gender perspective. She conducts research on deliberative democracy, women’s movements, women and political participation and gender and militarism. Her articles have been published in national and international academic journals and books. She has taught various courses in political science and gender studies. 

Aslı E. Mert (Post Doctoral Researcher, KOC-KAM & UNESCO Chair)

Aslı E. Mert works as a post-doctoral researcher of the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality and Sustainable Development at Koc University. She completed her BA degree in Sociology at Marmara University and received her MSc and DPhil degrees (both at the Department of Sociology) from University of Oxford. Her doctoral research investigated highly educated women’s underrepresentation in top-ranked, male-dominated occupations, and the problematic vicious circle created by the combination of unbalanced domestic division of labour at the micro level, prejudiced employer behaviour at the meso level and the lack of adequate supporting social policies for women as employees/employers and men as husbands/fathers at the macro level. Her main research interests are women’s career trajectories in different areas of the labour market, reconciliation of family and paid work with an emphasis on related social policies, and individuals’ happiness/life satisfaction levels exclusively based on employment.
