Women’s Empowerment for Sustainable Development

UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality and Sustainable Development is proud to offer a one-week international summer academy on “Women’s Empowerment for Sustainable Development”. This program aims to respond to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5 focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment. It will bring together leading academics, UN and GREVIO experts, and femocracts to share with the participants their academic and professional knowledge and experience. The seminar curriculum will have short courses. The courses will be designed as intensive workshops and discussions to stimulate innovative strategies considering country-specific and global challenges. They will include the latest research outputs, facts & figures, best practices, and analysis of women’s empowerment and gender-based discrimination.

This Summer Academy targets the international audience of potential women leaders – particularly young politicians, civic society representatives, academics and professionals.

The curriculum covers the following topics: the international legal framework for women’s empowerment (such as CEDAW, Belém do Pará Convention, Istanbul Convention), political participation of women and voting behavior, legislative decision making and women, violence against women, women’s employment, women and foreign policy.

The academy will take place from Monday to Friday (09:00- 16:00) including seminars, interactive workshops and site visits.

Who Should Attend?

Students, researchers and professionals from diverse disciplines with a focus on program topics and those who have interest in women’s empowerment and gender issues.

The summer academy seminars and readings will both be conducted in English.

A certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the program.

Confirmation of Registration        

Candidates will be informed regarding their status of application within 15 days and if they are accepted, their registration will be completed only after they make the full payment.

Tuition

  • The fee for the academy is 1500 Euros (covers accommodation at Koç University Campus and breakfast and lunch on program days).
  • For the participants who wish to self-arrange their accommodation in Istanbul, the fee is 1125 Euros.
  • The participants are responsible for their travel to Istanbul and transportation to Koç University.
  • All fee packages cover the expenses of course materials, field trips and social programs.

Payments will be received only via online credit card transactions. A secure payment link will be provided to those whose applications are accepted after evaluation.

Scholarship

Limited number of full scholarships will be available (only for selected 5 candidates). Applicants who wish to apply for a scholarship should indicate their choice in the relevant section of the application form with a short statement of their financial constraints. Please note that this is a non-profit program and the scholarships will be granted based on the availability of excess funds upon the completion of the application round.

Scholarship results will be announced in June 2019.

 

Lodging and Travel

The Academy will be held at Koç University Rumelifeneri Campus in Istanbul, Türkiye

Dormitory accommodations at Koç University are included in your academy registration. Accommodations include single and double room options with private bathrooms.  The dormitory rooms will be available from 1 September to 7 September 2019.  If you plan on arriving earlier or leaving later, you are responsible for arranging your own accommodations.
